The Urdang Academy, the ultimate choice for training in Dance and Musical Theatre, is internationally renowned for its diversity and its cutting edge training by industry professionals.

I was asked to document the academy's young students training and rehearsing. Shot over a period of three weeks, it was a pleasure to record this group of dedicated performers as they were guided by the skilled team of Urdang's teaching staff.

Six images nominated in the Masters Cup Awards 2011

 I was really happy to find earlier this week that six of my images were nominated over three categories in the Photography Masters Cup 2011.The Masters Cup is one of the leading international awards honoring color photography and it’s jury is selected from the likes of Esquire, Taschen, Weiden+Kennedy, Phaidon and Vogue. AOP 2011 awards success

Got some great news yesterday, I was voted best in category at the AOP 2011 awards  for my non commissioned project on the The Sri Lankan Special Boat Squadron.

Here’s a few images from the project that didn’t get submitted to the wards.

 

New York heat wave

 I’m just back from a trip to New York where temperatures reached 42 degrees C, an all time record for the City. New Yorkers had been suffering the customary summer heat and humidity for a number weeks before last Fridays record temperatures. Below are some portraits of people looking pensive in the heat.

My new portfolios

These are images of my new folios by the lovely people at Cathy Roberts. I printed the images full bleed on both sides to give the folios the feel of  proper books as you turn the pages.

Rajasthan

In march I travelled to Rajasthan to shoot some of its magical cities.I timed the trip to coincide with the festival of Holi, a  religious spring festival celebrated by Hindus. Masses of people partake in the fun by throwing colored powder and water at each other. I was also lucky enough to be in Jaipur for the elephant festival.

 

Sad news from Marrakech

Last Thursday I was shocked to hear that  a terrorist bomb had killed 13 people in the Café Argana in Marrakech. I was on assignment shooting a travel story in the city two weeks ago and had coffee in café Argana every day during my stay. My thoughts have been with both travelers and locals affected by this terrible event.

The first post

 Welcome to my new blog. I plan to post news of recent work regularly and it would be great if you would consider subscribing. 

My first post is from a shoot in Zanzibar last month. Most of the images were taken in and around Stone Town, Zanzibar’s cultural and historical heart. The town is reminiscent of the Kasbahs of North Africa and as I walked through the ancient streets, I was also reminded of Havana, a city I photographed for a book ten years ago. Due to a mix of cultural and religious reasons, the residents of Stone Town were very reluctant to be photographed. I had to flatter and cajole my subjects before they inevitably turned away from my camera, politely protesting. More images from both Stone Town and Havana can be seen on my website.
